If you have detected a forest or peat fire
If you witness such an incident, first assess the situation clearly.
Immediately report the incident to the rescue service by calling 101 or 112. The main task is to prevent the fire from gaining strength and spreading. To do this, you should extinguish the fire, carefully inspect the area, and ensure that there are no remaining hotspots. The most common method of extinguishing fire in the forest is to beat back the flames at the edge of the fire. Green branches are used for beating back, and soil can also be thrown onto the fire's edge.
Do not waste time on a fire that has already gained significant strength – in this case, hurry for help. When leaving the fire area, walk against the wind, perpendicular to the fire's edge, along clearings, roads, glades, and riverbanks. In case of heavy smoke, if possible, cover your mouth and nose with a wet cloth.
During extinguishing, it is necessary to follow safety rules and remember that during crown fires, when the treetops are burning, safe havens can be the banks of water bodies, large glades, and broadleaf forests without coniferous undergrowth. It is not advisable to seek shelter on roads and clearings surrounded by coniferous forests, especially young trees with low-hanging crowns, as well as in ravines overgrown with forest. The burning of trees in open areas is always very intense. In dry weather and windy conditions, burning branches, leaves, and embers can be carried for tens of meters. When discovering a peat fire, keep in mind that deep depressions may form in the burning zone, so move cautiously, checking the depth of the burned layer with a stick beforehand.
According to the Code of Administrative Offenses, violation of fire safety requirements in forests and peatlands or violation of the ban on their visitation (if such a decision has been made) is subject to penalties of up to 12 basic units. A similar violation that leads to the destruction or damage of forests or peatlands results in a fine of up to 30 basic units.
