The results of the region's work in the Year of Improvement were discussed in Vitebsk.
The results were reported by the chairman of the regional committee for natural resources and environmental protection, Roman Koltsa. He reminded that the past year was the first in the five-year quality plan, and the main focus of the work was on restoring order on the land and improving the living conditions in populated areas. Relevant activities are carried out in the region annually. Social and transport infrastructure is being developed, issues of environmental safety, waste management systems, and others are being addressed.
In 2025, populated areas continued to transform: active greening was carried out, and the street and road network was repaired. The demolition of vacant and dilapidated houses was carried out. Great attention was paid to ensuring the operation of drinking water supply systems, street lighting, and the arrangement of sports and children's playgrounds.
Among the priorities is restoring order in the territories of agricultural organizations and production facilities.
The northern region faced challenging tasks in 2025. For a number of indicators, it was necessary to achieve 10-15% more than in the previous year.
Roman Koltsa emphasized that the action plan was approved by the resolution of the regional executive committee No. 212 "On the Conduct of the Year of Improvement" and included 88 items. The activities were completed, and throughout the year adjustments were made to increase the tasks. In addition, the plan was supplemented.
In populated areas, more than 41 thousand trees and 29 thousand shrubs were planted, and 25 hectares of lawns were arranged and repaired. The normative level of greening at 40% has been achieved in all cities of the region.
Work was carried out on the sanitary cleaning of watercourses and water bodies, as well as the repair and arrangement of sports grounds. On such facilities, 118 small architectural forms were installed and repaired, and 82 containers for waste collection were installed. 14 springs were arranged.
– Planned tasks for the liquidation of well sealing have been completed, – added Roman Koltsa. – Work has also been carried out to regulate the spread and population of Sosnowski's hogweed over an area of more than 4.5 thousand hectares, taking into account repeated works. Special attention in 2026 should be paid to combating Sosnowski's hogweed in the most invaded areas: Braslav, Vitebsk, Hrodna, Orsha, Tolochin, and Ushachi.
Regarding the forest fund, 18 new ecological trails have been created on its territory. Sanitary logging has been carried out on 5.5 thousand hectares, and more than 935 hectares have been cleared of windfall and broken trees.
Good roads are logistics, potential for economic development of the region, safety, and comfort for the movement of local residents and tourists. Last year, current repairs of republican roads with a length of 268 km were carried out in the region. The area near transport arteries was decorated with more than 80 small architectural forms. To maintain cleanliness and order along the roads, more than forty containers for waste collection were installed.
Eight passenger platforms and ten stopping points were repaired at railway stations and stops.
Great attention is also paid to the waste management system and secondary material resources. Waste sorting complexes are being built and modernized, and new methods and technologies for using solid municipal waste are being implemented, etc. As of early January, there are 22 landfills for solid municipal waste operating in the region, and 6 have been closed.
The Novopolotsk regional complex for waste management has been put into operation, which means that the landfills for solid municipal waste in Novopolotsk and Ushachi are to be closed.
In total, the city and district executive committees in the region have developed and approved 23 waste management schemes for all administrative-territorial units, including gardening associations and garage cooperatives. Contracts for waste removal have been concluded by more than 77% of registered gardening associations in the Vitebsk region and about 84% of garage cooperatives.
– In order to fulfill the instructions of the head of state, the Government, and to comply with waste management legislation, it is necessary to take measures to develop and regularly update schemes, as well as to ensure 100% conclusion of contracts, – Roman Koltsa pointed out, adding that the most common violation of waste management legislation is their placement outside authorized locations (1.3 thousand cases last year).
