The official visit of Lukashenko to the DPRK has begun.
The President's motorcade was accompanied by an honorary motorcycle escort.
The visit takes place on March 25 and 26 at the invitation of the Chairman of the State Affairs of the DPRK Kim Jong Un. The central event of the visit will be negotiations between the leaders of the two countries. It is planned to discuss the full range of areas for developing relations between Belarus and the DPRK, to identify the main areas of mutual interest and the most promising projects for implementation.
The visit aims to strengthen the legal framework of relations and promote the activation of bilateral cooperation.
Aleksandr Lukashenko and Kim Jong Un previously met in September 2025 in Beijing, where they attended a parade among invited foreign leaders. At that time, the DPRK leader invited the President of Belarus to visit his country at any convenient time.
In December of last year, in an interview with the Newsmax television channel, the head of the Belarusian state shared his impressions of personal communication with the Chairman of the State Affairs of the DPRK: "He is a decent, calm, honest person. It was a brief meeting. But I had that impression. I am sure that my impression is not misleading. You can reach an agreement with him."
Recently, Aleksandr Lukashenko sent congratulations to Kim Jong Un: in February - on his re-election as General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, and already in March, on the eve of the visit, - on his re-election as Chairman of the State Affairs of the DPRK. The President confirmed Minsk's interest in actively expanding political and economic ties with Pyongyang at various levels.
Currently, the legal framework of bilateral relations is based on intergovernmental agreements on trade and economic cooperation, on the establishment of a joint commission for trade and economic cooperation, and on facilitating the implementation and mutual protection of investments. Earlier, an agreement was also concluded to avoid double taxation concerning income and property taxes.
One of the notable events in recent years in the development of cooperation between Minsk and Pyongyang was the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Maxim Ryzhankov to the DPRK in the summer of 2024. At that time, there was talk of mutual interest in developing trade. In particular, the possibilities of supplying Belarusian pharmaceutical products and food, as well as importing traditional quality Korean cosmetics, were discussed.
Prospects for cooperation in the fields of agriculture, education, healthcare, culture, and sports were announced.
At the same time, Belarus expressed its readiness to consider options for participation in trilateral initiatives, implementing various projects not only directly with the DPRK but also in cooperation with Russia or China. After all, these countries have accumulated a wealth of relations with the DPRK over several decades, which could be utilized in mutual interests.
The countries also have good experience in cooperation on international issues. In October 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the DPRK Choe Son Hui participated in the III Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security and stated the DPRK's readiness to contribute to building a multipolar world.
The relations between Minsk and Pyongyang have a rich history overall. For example, in 1984, the President of the DPRK Kim Il Sung visited Belarus. Delegation members laid a wreath at the monument-obelisk in Victory Square, visited a tractor factory, and the Belarusian Exhibition of Economic Achievements. The high guest also visited the heroic Brest Fortress.
