Caution, flammable liquids!
Vapor flashes of gasoline, acetone, benzene, toluene, some alcohols, and esters, according to rescue reports, periodically cause fires, resulting in people being hospitalized. The term "flammable liquids" (FL) speaks for itself, thus their use requires special attention.
Any flammable liquid can pose a serious health hazard or risk of fire if used improperly. If the concentration of the vapor cloud reaches a certain temperature, the liquid ignites. Flammable liquids have a high flash point, while easily ignitable liquids have a low flash point, making them more dangerous to humans. If a flammable substance spills, it is essential to open all windows and ventilate the room immediately. Turn off all electrical equipment, as it is a source of sparks that can lead to an explosion. If something gets on clothing – remove it; if it gets on skin – wash it off with water as soon as possible. If a large amount of flammable substance has spilled, it is necessary to evacuate people and call the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
When discussing which substances and where they can be stored, separate rules are established for organizations and enterprises, regulated by the Decree of the President of Belarus No. 7 "On the Development of Entrepreneurship". As for residential premises, it is prohibited to store explosive substances, FL and GL, cylinders with hot gas, and other explosive substances and materials in auxiliary rooms of apartment buildings (common areas), and containers after their use; residential premises must be used for their intended purpose.
It is essential to inform children about the dangers of flammable liquids. What a child should know – FL have a very strong and unpleasant smell. Most often, children come into contact with FL, which include paint products, during play at construction sites or in homes and apartments where repairs are being made. Do not forget that FL in the context of children's games also includes hair spray, cockroach poison, air fresheners, and perfume. It is impossible to remove all dangerous items from life, but parents must inform about the dangers, teach, and set an example.
How to extinguish? Flammable liquid should never be extinguished with water. This is because gasoline, kerosene, and similar substances are lighter than water, and when attempting to douse them with water, they will float to the top, not only continuing to burn but also spreading sideways, increasing the area of the fire.
Since burning gasoline cannot occur without access to oxygen, methods that limit air access to the fire source can be used to extinguish it. FL can be extinguished using damp cloths or thick clothing, a powder fire extinguisher, or by using sand or soil; for this, it is necessary to throw them onto the burning surface. Sand or soil should be poured starting from the outer side of the burning liquid around its perimeter, then gradually pouring it from the edge to the center until the liquid is completely covered.
Take care of yourself! And remember: the cost of one mistake when using any hazardous substances is a human life.
