Caution, dangerous snow and icicles

Heavy snowfall and temperature fluctuations can lead to the formation of icicles and snow sliding off building roofs.

The sliding of accumulated snow mass from the roof is very dangerous!

Typically, such a mass is heterogeneous in composition and contains both loose masses of melted snow and chunks of compacted ice, often of significant volume and weight.

Remember: icicles most often form above downspouts, so these areas of building facades can be particularly dangerous; they should be avoided!

Exercise caution and, if possible, do not approach close to building walls. If while walking on the sidewalk you hear a suspicious noise from above – do not stop, look up, or investigate what has happened.

It may be the sliding of snow or an ice block. Running away from the building is also not advisable. You should press against the wall as quickly as possible; the roof overhang will provide shelter.

To prevent the formation of icicles and the sliding of snow masses, regular and timely removal of snow from roofs is essential. In the absence of snow, icicles simply have nothing to form from, meaning people below are safe.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations once again reminds all building owners, regardless of ownership forms, of the necessity to clear roofs of snow and ice to avoid injuries and collapses. Work zones and uncleared buildings below must be fenced off.
