The heating season is a time of increased danger, and knowing how to protect yourself and your home is vital. The Braslav District Department of Emergency Situations explained what to pay attention to in order to prevent potential trouble.

Before actively using electric heaters, specialists of the Ministry of Emergency Situations recommend checking the condition of the electrical wiring, outlets, and switches, ensuring their functionality and avoiding overheating. Only functional, certified devices should be used, and repairs should be entrusted to professionals.

— Do not leave heaters on unattended, especially at night, — rescuers advise. — Place them at a safe distance from furniture, curtains, and other flammable items. It is strictly prohibited to dry clothes or towels on them.

Do not overload the electrical network: do not turn on several powerful devices simultaneously, use only quality extension cords and power strips with appropriate labeling.

Rescuers of the Ministry of Emergency Situations remind: when leaving home, always disconnect all electrical appliances from the network. This simple action will help avoid trouble and ensure the safety of your home.

The agency also explained why the number of fires increases in winter. With the onset of cold weather, the risk of fires significantly increases, and specialists of the Ministry of Emergency Situations name several main reasons.

— Firstly, unsafe use of stove heating, — they explained at the Ministry of Emergency Situations. — Stoves and fireplaces, which are often used for additional heating, require special attention and regular maintenance. Failure to follow operating rules, cracks in chimneys, or lack of preparation for the heating season often become the cause of fires. Secondly, violations of fire safety rules when smoking. In cold weather, many prefer not to go outside and smoke indoors. Smoking in bed, especially while intoxicated, according to the statistics of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, is one of the most frequent causes of tragic fires.
