Employees of the Braslav District Emergency Situations Department remind the rules of fire safety when smoking!

In 2023, 5 people died in fires in the Braslav District. The cause of the tragedy can be attributed to careless handling of fire while smoking. A smoker may fall asleep, and a cigarette can fall onto bedding, which can cause ignition. Therefore, it is important to remind the rules of fire safety when smoking.

It is often observed that some individuals, while lighting up, throw matches and butts anywhere, smoke in prohibited places, and place butts on wooden items near materials that can ignite at the slightest contact with fire.

A butt thrown onto sawdust causes it to smolder. A smoldering butt can also ignite paper, hay, or straw. This indicates that fires caused by an unextinguished cigarette are more common than it may seem at first glance.

Special attention should be paid to underage smokers. Imitating adults, young people smoke, choosing the most secluded places for this. When adults appear, they try to hide their wrongdoing, discarding an unextinguished cigarette, which can provoke a fire.

Butts thrown from balconies or windows can also provoke a fire, landing on the balconies or loggias of lower floors, where old items and containers with flammable and easily ignitable liquids are often stored. A butt can enter an apartment through an open window, where conditions for the development of combustion can be most favorable.

When smoking, follow these fire safety rules:
1. Smoke only in specially designated smoking areas.
2. Do not smoke lying in bed.
3. Do not forget to extinguish the cigarette after smoking.
4. Do not smoke near flammable materials.
5. Do not throw unextinguished butts from upper floor balconies, into garbage chutes, and bins.
